Common questions

Is this the official romanization?

No. It is a simplified, English-friendly transliteration meant for reading and learning. Official systems (for passports, maps or library catalogues, such as ISO 9, BGN/PCGN or Ukraine’s 2010 national system) differ in details.

Why is “е” sometimes “ye” and sometimes “e”?

In Russian, Belarusian and Mongolian the letter е is pronounced “ye” at the start of a word and, in Russian, after a vowel. The converter follows that rule. In Ukrainian the same applies to є, ї, й, ю and я.

Does it handle stress?

No. Stress is not written in normal Russian or Ukrainian text, so the converter cannot add it. Listen to a native speaker in the free ParrotBack vocabulary to learn it.
